Phobia relief on TV in the UK

Important Note: This article was written prior to 2010 and is now outdated. Please use my newest advancement, Optimal EFT. It is more efficient, more powerful and clearly explained in my free e-book, The Unseen Therapist™.  Best wishes, Gary

Hi Everyone,

I've been in recent correspondence with Val & Paul Lynch who are both highly experienced EFT'ers in the United Kingdom. They recently appeared on a popular TV program in the UK wherein they used EFT to relieve two ladies of intense phobias (heights and frogs) before a live audience of over 1 million people.

I read their report (given below) with both Gratitude and a Gulp. The Gratitude had to do with the major exposure this provided for EFT (we ALL benefit by it) and for Val & Paul's dedication and skills for this achievement. The Gulp had to do with the possibilities that it could have backfired and thus become embarrassing.

I would have done it differently.

I spoke with Paul Lynch about this backfiring possibility and he agreed that if it hadn't worked so well it may, indeed, have been embarrassing. However, he and Val had unshakable confidence in EFT and proceeded in front of over a million people to "wave their magic fingertips" and provide this exciting result.

Phobias often collapse quickly with EFT...but not always. Sometimes they have many, many aspects and it takes quite awhile to get results....perhaps longer than the TV time allotted. Also, I've seen phobias that were metaphors (or "covers") for much deeper core issues. These require delving into personal issues that the client may not want to divulge in front of a public audience.

So....you take your chances when doing live demonstrations with only 1 or 2 people. The odds favor success but, when you run into a complicated case, you will have plenty of reason to wish you had never shown up.

Ideally, I would like to perform such a demonstration with 5 or more people at the same time. This way the law of averages will work in your favor and you are likely to have success with most of them. You avoid the risk of having "all your eggs in one basket".

Something else I would do, whether I had 1 person for demonstration or 10, is to preframe the whole thing by saying something like...."I don't really know what is going to happen here because we are on stage and that is the most difficult circumstance in which to obtain results. Conventional techniques might generate improvements around 20% of the time so any success we might have should be compared to that."

With this kind of preframe you "cushion" the fact that you might not succeed AND, if you do succeed in the manner you truly expect, that success will look superb compared to the "20% standard" you set.

Just some hints from someone who has been there.

Now, on to this fascinating account of how Val & Paul Lynch's TV efforts moved us all forward in the public eye.

Dear Gary

I am writing to let you know that my wife Val & I recently appeared on national television in the UK presenting a feature on EFT.

My opening line to initially get Channel 4's interest was "EFT really works, all we want is a chance to prove it!" Within two hours of me submitting the online form to the Richard & Judy show (a married celebrity couple that have been dear to everyone's hearts in the UK for over ten years) the phone rang; it was R&J's agent. We sent our book as requested and three weeks later we were asked to go on the show... live! Our belief in EFT is unshakeable and so we agreed.

We were to work with two ladies, each with very intense life long debilitating phobias.

First, to get a level of their fear for the audience of millions, they were each asked to try and expose themselves to their phobic trigger and were invited to stop at any time if they wished. First was Annette, she had a phobia of heights. She managed to get about 4 feet off the ground in the hydraulic crane specially provided by the show, before she shouted Stop!.

Susan, whose phobia of frogs and toads was so bad that she would feel faint or nauseous if she saw a picture of one, didn't even wait for me to turn over the Colour picture of a frog before she looked away in utter disgust and began to wretch. I was sitting right in front of her and I could hear her stomach begin to rumble. Needless to say I quickly turned the picture over again.

These sections were recorded; the test to see whether EFT had been successful would be live.

Val and I worked tirelessly on these two lovely ladies (I was tapping on Susan whilst she was eating her sandwich!...such was my determination that EFT was going to succeed. Susan's husband joined us later and he told me that he had to cover pictures of toads and frogs ever since they had been married (over 30 years). Susan knew when her fear began. It was at the age of 9 when she was held by some boys whilst one of them held a frog up to her face and threatened to put it down her dress.

Annette's phobia of heights began at the age of 11 when the Ferris wheel she was on became stuck for "what seemed like a lifetime". Her fear was later compounded when she climbed Blackpool Tower, this time she "really freaked out."

She had a problem with open space height. Once, when she tried to cross the millennium bridge in Newcastle, her legs turned to jelly and the panic was overwhelming. She had to get on her hands and knees in an irrational attempt to hold on to the floor.

Annette sought the assistance of a cognitive therapist in an effort to get over her problem, and also tried hypnotherapy. She hoped that the treatments had worked and decided to try and get on a ski lift whilst on holiday in Austria last year. She became hysterical and had to be helped out by her husband. Annette had also appeared on another TV Programme before in an unsuccessful attempt to remove her phobia.

The time to test EFT came and the two ladies were at last confronted with their fear. Susan said, "My family won't believe this" as she looked into the eyes of a huge toad which weighed in at about two pounds. A big aspect of her fear was of them looking at her.

Annette was elevated to a height of 50 feet in the hydraulic lift, and never said stop. As she came down, the smile on her face said it all. She said it was amazing. Richard and Judy were genuinely impressed with the results. After the show I asked Susan if she would like to touch the toad, or Trevor, as he is known. She readily agreed and was photographed stroking him.

Val and I were asked to go back on the show the following week because of the enormous interest in EFT and to report on the progress of Susan and Annette. Annette flew back to Austria the day after the show. She was going to put EFT to the ultimate test by ascending the mountain in the same ski lift, in which she became hysterical the previous year. Judy said that she had heard from Annette and that she had been up in the ski lift several times, no problem! The photograph of Susan stroking the toad was also shown.

Best wishes, Val & Paul Lynch
