Fears And Phobias

Elevators

Some phobias have hidden roots -- like this fear of elevators

Hi Everyone,

Ever try EFT on a phobia only to find that it is difficult to get rid of it completely? Al Viguerie shows us such a case and how he dug up the foundational cause.

Hugs, Gary

Hi Gary

Recently, a 62 year old man was referred to me for hypnosis by a colleague.  His presenting problem was an elevator phobia.  At the first interview he walked up the stairs to my third floor office.  He said the last time he rode an elevator he became so frightened he physically attacked a man who was on the elevator with him.  Since then he had avoided elevators and climbed stairs instead.  Because of his occupation, he often had to climb a lot of stairs.

During the first session, I took a history, then introduced him to EFT.  I led him through tapping on his fear, using phrases like, Even though I am afraid of elevators … Even though I am afraid of closed spaces … Even though I am afraid I will lose control…

The fear, which was originally a 10 on a 0 to 10 scale, reduced to 2 out of 10.  He took home a handout and promised to do some tapping at home.  He chose to take the elevator down after the session, and I rode with him.  He reported slight anxiety.  At the next session one week later, he told me he had ridden the elevator up to my office with anxiety of a three on a scale of 0 to 10.

Then he began to recount an earlier trauma when he was on an airline flight with his father.  As he went to the bathroom, a male airline steward walked in with him, locked the door and proceeded to molest him sexually, threatening bodily harm if he told anyone.

He tried to fight him off, and could not.  As he told the story I became aware that the hostility he had toward someone in the elevator was a flashback to the event many years earlier and the anger toward the man who had taken advantage of him.  I asked him how strong his anger toward the man was at this moment and he responded that it was 10 out of 10.  He then said he could picture the man threatening him in the room at this moment.

I then began with Even though I couldn't fight you off, I deeply respect myself… Even though I hate you for what you did… Even though I often feel scared and helpless because of you, I want you out of my life, I want you to leave this room, I want to let go of any control I am still allowing you to have over me...  I checked with him between tappings and the clear vision of the man became less clear until he was gone completely.

A check showed the level of intensity around the event at a zero out of 10.  This was about a month ago, he has been riding elevators with no distress, does not yet have an airplane flight planned, and yet feels confident he could fly with none of the previous distress.

Regards, Al Viguerie
